Pests
If you have come to the pests page, I am assuming you may have found some critter (or critters) in the garden and are interested in a possible solution. Every year vegetable gardeners have to fight battles against garden pests. They can ruin a garden in a hurry if left unchecked.
It is never fun to find some weird looking bug stalking around your favorite vegetable plant, but don’t worry – there is usually a very easy remedy out there to get rid of the intruder. If you discover a large infestation of your vegetables then you may need help from the professionals.
How ever bad your bug problem gets, I always suggest to only use pesticides as a last resort. The whole point of having a home garden is to grow fresh vegetables without any chemicals. There have been times that if I had a very bad pest problem that I would just pull the plants up and start over before I used pesticides.
If you are new to vegetable gardening (or any other type of gardening) a good source of information about common pests in your area is your local cooperative extension office. They can give you information about the pests in your area and how to prevent and treat them. You can click the above link to go to the USDA website. Once there, just click the state you live in on the map, then find your locality.
I will list the most common pests that I have come across in my garden, and are very common to most gardens throughout the U.S. Of course the pests I have listed here are not all the pests you may encounter. There are thousands of little bugs running, flying, and stalking around the typical garden.
You can use the links below to navigate to each pest page, or you can use the menu under ‘Pests’ at the top of the page to navigate to each page. Hopefully, no one will need these pages this year, but they include some very useful information.
Aphids
Cucumber Beetles
Cutworms
Grub Worms
Hornworms
Leafminers
Moles
Nematodes
Snails and Slugs
Squash Bugs
Voles
If you find a bug that you can’t identify then you can visit the web sites listed below. If you still can’t find out what the critter is, then use the Contact page and send me an email. I’ll try to find out what it is with you.
