Have you ever gone out to the garden, and found a ripening tomato that gets your mouth watering, only to find that it is cracked or split open? The first reaction could be disappointment, followed by anger. Your mind flashes through possible scenarios that involve animal pests, insect pests, or maybe some agitating neighborhood kid that has sabotaged your great looking tomato. While shopping at my local Home Depot Saturday, I came across a very interesting product – TerraCycle Garden Fertilizer. It stuck out as an interesting product because it was packaged in what looked like two reused 20 oz. soft drink bottles. After reading the label on the bottles, I realized that this is a wonderful idea. They were indeed two reused soft drink bottles that contained liquified worm poop to be used as a flower or vegetable garden fertilizer. Continue »

I know this sounds like an odd topic because soaker hoses are suppose to have holes, right? The whole point of a soaker hose is to leak water. Well, there are moments when a large hole can develop in a soaker hose, and create something that looks more like Old Faithful in your garden.

This happened to me recently as I peered out into the garden one day and saw water shooting up about 3 feet in the air. The bad thing about the situation was that I had just finished laying down the soaker hoses just a couple days prior. I guess that is what I get for buying the cheaper hoses. Continue »

Properly watering tomatoes is arguably one of the most important steps for growing plump, juicy tomatoes in the home garden. Watering too much or not enough can destroy or limit tomato plant production, and can contribute to increasing the chances for disease.

Deep watering tomato plants is the best way to properly water your tomatoes. What is deep watering? It is just what it sounds like – watering plants at their deepest root level. Watering in this manner will ensure good root development, resulting in stronger, healthier plants. Continue »
