No, this isn't a post about a new item on the menu at the local diner, this is about some of the latest vegetables varieties that are coming out for 2010.

Every year seed companies come out with new and interesting vegetable varieties that can melt a vegetable gardener's heart. It seems like the introduction of new vegetables every year has turned into a competition between different companies for who can come out with the most interesting, colorful, and sometimes bizarre, vegetables of the year.

As the saying goes, "Competition breeds excellence", and the same can be said for this year's picks of new vegetable varieties. Let's check out six hot, new varieties for 2010!

W. Atlee Burpee

Burpee is hand's down the most popular seed company in America. Burpee was founded in Philadelphia in 1876, and boasts a seed inventory in the tens of thousands. Every year Burpee is one of the leading companies that introduce new hybrid seed varieties for the year.

Here are a few that are new for 2010 you may find very interesting:

Tye-Dye Hybrid Tomato

The Tye-Dye tomato is a great looking hybrid tomato that features an orange and red coloration and full flavor. Here's what Burpee says about this new tomato.
One flavor-full, color-full, beautiful tomato. This breakthrough bicolor gold and red hybrid delivers all the heirloom flavor of Big Rainbow, Pineapple and Georgia Streak-with bigger yields, consistent form and better disease-resistance. The large, smooth 7-ounce fruits, miraculously marbled with red streaks, are lusciously sweet, mild, and non-acidic. Indeterminate. 78 Days.
Hot Pepper Pinata Mix

If you are looking for cayenne-style peppers that also offer some color, then the Hot Pepper Pinata Mix might be just for you. Here is Burpee's description of this pepper.
Hot, hot, hot. This collection gives you your pick of colorful hot red, yellow, green, purple and orange peppers. These gorgeous Cayenne hotties-measuring 3"-add kick and color to salsas, hot sauces and chilis. The long, tapered, pencil thin fruits retain their bright colors when dried, for festive decoration. Scoville Heat Rating: 30,000-50,000 (i.e. hot, but not insanely so, about the same as Tabasco™). Open pollinated. 65 Days.
Zucchini Green Tiger

Burpee claims the Green Tiger Zucchini was voted best-looking and best-tasting, but by who I don't know. It is definitely a great looking zucchini that should add a visual spark to your garden, and your favorite zucchini dishes. Here is Burpee's description.
Burpee Exclusive.
This hybrid is the best-looking, best tasting zucchini we've seen or tasted. The 8" cylindrical fruits are beautifully and boldly striped.
55-60 days.

Purple Pak Carrot

If you would like a carrot that is different than the usual orange carrot, then perhaps purple is your color. Here's Jonny's Seeds' description of the Purple Pak carrot.

Millionaire Okra

If you are an okra lover like me, then the Millionaire should be right up your alley. Millionaire also features edible flowers, and can be grown in containers. Here is what Johnny's Seeds has to say about this new okra plant.
Medium large, sturdy plants yield large quantities of dark green pods. Harvest promptly, when pods are 3-4" long, as oversized pods become tough. Large, robust flowers are also edible and may be stuffed or used as garnish. Millionaire is one day earlier and more vigorous than Cajun Delight, which it replaces. Avg. 8,000 seeds/lb. Packet: 65 seeds. Days to Maturity or Bloom: 50
