I was out in the summer squash patch today hoping to find some nice sized squash ready for picking. I found a few, but it was not easy because my squash plants have become huge, and squash love to hide.
After finding a couple keepers, I happened to look down at one of the plants and a good sized squash caught my eye. I couldn't see it that well because it was underneath some leaves and other smaller squash. I reached down to pluck it from the plant. As soon as my fingers touched it, I knew something wasn't quite right with this squash.
I gave it a slight twist and Pop! - it snapped loose from the plant. My eyes lit up in surprise when I realized what it was I was looking at. The strangest, craziest looking yellow squash I have ever seen.

As you can see in the picture, it is actually two squash that have grown together - like Siamese twins. I have never seen this before, and am not sure what causes it. Perhaps it is a pollination defect, or possibly two squash that were growing so close together they melded together? I'm really at a loss on this one. If anyone has any suggestions what happened with this squash, or have seen this before, I'd love to hear your story!
