Good Fertilizer for Roses

775 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Logan
I have about 10 rose plants in clay soil in the San Francisco Bay Area. What would be a good fertilizer for these? I see Espoma has a "Rose Tone" product that is a 4-3-2 fertilizer. Why do roses want less potassium? I happen to have some Espoma "Holly Tone" already for rhododendrons, but that is a 4-3-4 mix. Is it usable for roses?

I'd use a fertilizer for roses, not for rhododendrons, don't know why roses need less potassium.

My mother was into Roses. I remember she had a box of powder that said Rose food......not sure what it was. It was a while back, 25 years or so.

I've had excellent results with Bio Advanced Rose and Flower care... an all in one product that's super easy. We're all organic on the veggies and fruit tress but roses and flowers get the systemic treatment around here.
I buy a food that's made for roses, not anything else, also i put a thick layer of mulch after I've fed them in the spring.

I think cow manure and chicken manure are the best fertilizer for roses. Otherwise, you can use compost fertilizer which is made by compost tumbler. You can also own a compost tumbler, that can reduce your cost.

Make sure that the cow manure is well rotted but it could have weed seeds in it.
I always use a rose fertilizer and compost.
