Hi all,
There is a lot of area lying vacant in my backyard. So I thought of making it useful. My husband suggested me to start a vegetable garden there. It will be a time pass for me and we can also have fresh homegrown vegetables. Since I didn't know much about this, I searched online for some reference on how to start a vegetable garden. And I read this, http://inthebackyard.ca/start-backyard-vegetable-garden/. They are giving some easy steps to start a backyard vegetable garden. I want to know the other things that need to be kept in mind while starting off. Looking forward to expert suggestions on this. Thank you so much.

In books and articles on gardening and horticulture it is not difficult to find a lot of useful information about when to plant, how to take care of them, which companion plants are suitable for which crops. All this is very interesting and useful, but if you are a beginner, in the beginning you just need to find out which vegetables grow well in your area and do not require special care. Such plants will not be too few, and that is where you should start to gain experience in gardening.

I'm growing strait eights, they start dark green and keep growing but everything I read says cucumbers r ready at green. When I let them grow past 6-7 inches one end starts to stripe. When should I pick them??
