hi rena,welcome to the forum...i can't help you with these issues just wanted to say hi...look around there are alot of seasoned gardeners that may be able to answer your questions...happy gardening..
I live in So Oregon now and we have great gardening weather (zone 8), but I'm a former Minnesoootan (mpls area). I do remember my mom always having a great garden in the summertime - lots of carrots, peas and beans.
