A new piece of legislation was introduced to the U.S. Congress several months ago called The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, or also known as H.R. 875. In short, this bill would create a new department, The Food Safety Administration, that would be within the existing Department of Health and Human Services. H.R. 875 is being sponsored by Rosa DeLauro, who represents the third district of Connecticut.
This bill was brought about by the soaring number of cases of salmonella, e. coli, and other outbreaks throughout the country due to tainted produce. H.R. 875's main purpose is to set guidelines and controls to ensure the safety of imported foods to better the health of Americans.
Because of some language in the bill surrounding organic gardening and local farmers markets, there has been some uproar over this newly proposed bill. Many gardeners and farmers have taken this language to mean the end of organic gardening, and the onset of major constrictions on local farmers markets. To hopefully end some of the rumors and misconception pertaining to The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009, Congresswoman DeLauro has produced a Myth & Fact Sheet pertaining to H.R. 875:
