While browsing around the internet, I came across some very interesting websites that discussed a gardening technique called moon (or lunar) gardening. At first glance, I thought maybe they were referring to gardening at night. Strange, I thought, but it is cooler at night. After a bit of reading I realized I totally had the wrong idea.

Moon gardening is a way of gardening according to the phase of the moon. I remember as a kid my grandfather swore by the Farmer's Almanac - moon gardening is very similar. The belief is that the moon not only influences weather patterns and ocean tides, but also has an effect on seed germination and plant growth.

From what I have read, there are four phases of the moon: new moon, 2nd quarter, full moon, and fourth quarter. Each phase represents a time that you should perform certain tasks in the garden. For example, during a new moon crops that produce seeds outside the fruit (such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, and celery) should be planted. Following the guidelines for each moon phase is said to increase crop yields and growth.

I have never used these methods when planting, but may give them a try in the future to see how it compares. If you are interested in more information about moon gardening, take a look at these websites:
