Hi All,
I'm Michelle, I live in Southern California and this is my first year of having a real garden. I've discovered, after a couple rounds of plants that my soil is extremely deficient. I have only been able to grow corn and strawberry plants this year. The strawberries look beautiful, but aren't actually producing fruit. The corn also looks good, but is so infested with ants that theres no way we can actually eat the corn. I've tried a couple times with zucchini, but i can't get it to actually grown.

I also have 15 fruit trees. Mostly citrus, but I have a pomegranate, nectarine, plum, apricot and fig as well. Every one of my citrus and the nectarine all have leaf mina. I started spraying for that last week. Every tree also has ants. So, I'm trying to find an organic or natural insecticide for ants. I've done Diatomaceous Earth a handful of times, the problem is when it gets wet from the sprinklers, I have to reapply. And when its 90 out every day, that means every day.

Do you have any ideas about how to get rid of the ants. I think I need to pull everything out of the garden and start fresh after amending the soil. I'm wondering about the strawberries. Theres a lot of them! Like 2 15 foot rows of strawberries that are producing nothing!!! Its so frustrating! I'm new to this, so I'm really welcoming any information.

If I've missed some info that will help to fix the problem, please let me know. I'm so new, I feel dumb. I try to look things up online and just end up confusing my self sometimes. I tried talking to my mother in law about the soil today. She's had gardens for years. She tells me to forget amending the soil and just to get a lot of manure. Somehow I think thats not the best answer… ;)

Thanks All,
Cheers,
Michelle

If you know where the hill is pour hot vinegar down the hole. Mix with water 50/50. This is supposed to create a carbon dioxide gas that will kill the queen. I have not tried this yet but with my fire ants I will. Let me know how it works. If I get to it before you I'll let you know.
