A few weeks ago First Lady, Michelle Obama announced there will be a vegetable garden this year at The White House. The first garden at The White House since Eleanor Roosevelt's Victory Garden during WWII.

I found this to be very exciting. Mrs. Obama's intentions with this vegetable garden is to hopefully educate youngsters on the important of eating healthy, locally grown foods. Of course, she wants to provide her family and guests to The White House with wholesome nutritious fruits and vegetables as well.

"My hope," the first lady said in an interview in her East Wing office, "is that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities."
Michelle Obama In the Vegetable Garden

Twenty-three fifth graders from a local Washington, D.C. elementary school have volunteered to help with the digging, growing, and harvesting of the garden. The biggest thing that surprised me was that these fifth graders have been tending a garden at their school that has been in place since 2001.

That is amazing. I wish that more schools would take proactive steps towards teaching their students more about not only growing their own vegetables, but the importance of nutritious foods.

If we could get more locally grown produce into the school cafeterias; now that would be great! I remember when I was in high school getting a fresh salad or fruits was about as difficult as calculus, but I digress.

Dan Barber, an owner of Blue Hill at Stone Barns, an organic restaurant in Pocantico Hills, N.Y., that grows many of its own ingredients, said: "The power of Michelle Obama and the garden can create a very powerful message about eating healthy and more delicious food. I don't think it's a stretch to say it could translate into real change."
I could not agree more with Dan Barber on this. I believe the Obamas have a very good influence on the general public right now, and there is no better influence on promoting vegetable gardening than Michelle Obama starting a vegetable garden at The White House.

I must say that Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have really impressed me since they took office. The only thing I am wondering is.... sorry Mrs. Obama but that doesn't look like gardening clothes where I come from.
