I am trying to grow watermellon for the first time this year ( zone 5). The transplants were a impulse buy to see if i could get it to grow. They seem to be growing ok. Anyone have any advice on how to proceede.

There are two different flowers on a vine - one is male and the other female. If you look to the bottom of each you'll see the female looks like a baby watermelon. You have to self pollinate the female as soon as possible else, the blossom dies off. If you are sucessful, the blossom closes up rather quickly and you may have a watermelon in a couple months.
